49 Ways to Make a Living in the Philippines

During the time I lived in Cebu CIty (I live in the northern part of Cebu Province now), I had ADSL through the largest provider in the Philippines, PLDT (). The packages PLDT offered, for the most part, were reliable. Although, on the LinC Forums (link in the left column), as well as on other discussion groups online, I have recently seen where members have not been overly impressed with the speeds they are receiving from PLDT.

In my opinion, if you are coming to the Cebu area for work or retirement, and know you will be here for some time, I would strongly urge you to check on forums and discussion groups, to see what the current consensus is, regarding ADSL reliability in Cebu.

Now that I live in the province, about 100 kilometers to the north, I find that I am impressed with the ADSL that is offered through Globelines. I currently run a 2 Megabit download account. In fact, here is a result from a recent test, to a server in Dallas, Texas, from my home in Cebu:

Globelines 2Megabit speed test results from March 1, 2008.

Here is a link to the current ADSL package I have with Globelines, which is pretty good: 2 Megabit Package Specifications (Voice / Data)

Note: The above package offers a landline, as well as the data connection. I find that I rarely use the landline, having only about three friends who call me here at home.

Here is a link to the Globlines ADSL package I am considering upgrading to: 3 Megabit Package Specifications (Data Only)

Note: The above package offers a data connection only, no landline. But, considering landlines in the Philippines are not so common in homes anyway (cell phones are the single best way to communicate within the Philippines), it isn't such a big deal to not have one.

Both packages are currently offered at Php 1995/month, with a one-year signed contract. It took, with a little gentle persuasion, about one week from start to finish, for them to have the ADSL line connected. They connected the telephone (voice) first, and made sure it was operating. About two or three days later, they installed and connected the ADSL modem (data). I have had very few days since, where the connection was not connecting at all. This connection has been on since the first week of June, 2007.

From the time I lived in Cebu, I had always heard from others, that Globelines in the city was not reliable. (I have never had Globelines service personally, at any time while I lived in Cebu City.) However, I can vouch for the reputation of Globelines, having used their service since living in the province.
